Fax: +353 (0)94 9030018
Description
Ballintubber Abbey was founded in 1216 by Cathal Crovdearg O'Conor, King of Connacht, near the site of the church built by St Patrick in 441. Despite the Abbey's turbulent history, which included repression and burning, the Abbey 'refused to die' and now has the unique status of being Ireland's only royal Abbey which has been incontinuous use for over 780 years.
Located on limestone lands near Lough Carra, South of Castlebar, Ballintubber is itself now a place of pilgrimage. Its centrepiece is the Chursh of an Augustinian monastery - "The Abbey that refused to die" - words from the title of a beautiful poem which C Day Lewis write about it in 1967.
This appellation "The Abbey that refused to die", refers not so much to structure and stonework as to the living faith of the people and community who have sustained its heart and soul, even to the present day.
The Abbey is the parish church for the local community. The spiritual power house of the Abbey is the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, where there is daily Eucharistic Adoration. Read more about Ballintubber Abbey And The Celtic Furrow Read less about Ballintubber Abbey And The Celtic Furrow.
